“Ferrocin” as an important factor for the protection of the population in radiation failures and other incidents related to radioactive pollution

This preparation known in Russia under the name Ферроцин - "Ferrocin" (equivalent in the West - Radiogardase®). It can effectively bind radioactive cesium, and therefore the drug is indispensable for the elimination of a variety of radioactive contaminations, which are the result of consequences of accidents.

Ferrocin (as one form of Prussian Blue) practically insoluble in water and acids, after ingested animals or humans is not absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract. Its use in the form of Prussian Blue Drugs (PBD) is a necessary protective means people against man-made accidents or terrorist attacks, the effect of which can be release into the environment of significant amounts of radioactive substances or heavy metals.

The experience of elimination the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster has shown Ferrocin indispensable in solving the following tasks:

- An antidote after poisoning people by isotopes of cesium, rubidium, thallium and other products of uranium fission; - Veterinary preparation to remove radionuclides and heavy metals from the body of farm animals.

In addition, Ferrocin based sorbents are used to control pollution of natural water bodies because of isotopes of cesium and assess the impact of this pollution

Industrial release Ferrocin and preparations based on it produced now (at 2010) only in Germany (company Heyltex) and Russia (Federal State Unitary Enterprise “UNIKHIM-S-OZ”). Private producer of Ferrocin substance at now – EKSORB Ltd. The special importance of the drug to the national security is recognized by a number of states.

Obviously, elimination of the consequences of a terrorist act (or large-scale natural disaster) require fast access to large quantities of pharmaceuticals and medical supplies. Such amounts on the local sites may not be. You must to create a national reserve, as a resource for general use. This work has already been done in the United States, where a program of Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) was done.

SNS brings together national stocks of antibiotics, chemical antidotes, antitoxins, life-support medications, necessary life-support equipment and medical equipment items. SNS quickly replenishes state and local public health agencies in the event of an emergency in the US or abroad.

Among all kinds of radiation contamination 137Cs isotope is especially dangerous. Also, having a significant half-life - 29 years, it is widely used in medicine for gamma radiation therapy.

As a preparation for the fight with 137Cs, the United States choose a pharmaceutical product under the brand Radiogardase® (iron ferrocyanide or insoluble Prussian blue). Since 2003, opened its purchases from Heyltex company's offices in Texas on SNS warehouses. The cost of this product is quite high. In 2007, the drug was sold in packs of 30 capsules (500 mg of active ingredient) at a price of $ 80 for 30 capsules. In fact, Heyltex has a monopoly position on market of Western countries in preparations containing ferrocyanide.

In Russia, competition to Radiogardase® able to make only the Ferrocin, Russian drug, which released at the pilot plant (at UNIKHIM) for 20 years already. However, the sharp increase of production of the drug in case of urgent need is impossible, so it is highly advisable to the formation of the Russian Federation, the domestic counterpart of the US SNS system.
